Race fans at Clay County Speedway were treated to another great night of racing on the lightning-fast 1/3 mile oval in Flora, IL this past Saturday, July 5. The Fastrak Midwest Touring Series made its first of seven visits to Clay County Speedway and race fans were treated to one of the best Late Model Features Clay County Speedway has seen in some time!
On the start of the race outside pole sitter, Nick Lyons #2x got the jump on #17 of Billy James but in the middle of turns one and two something appeared to break on the 2x machine of Lyons, resulting in him nearly rolling his car. Lyons pulled off the track and was unable to return. On the restart Billy James of Sikeston, MO jumped to the early lead over second place Darin Walker of Bowling Green, MO. Meanwhile, third place starter Ed Dixon of Washington, MO had his sights set on the front and in classic Ed Dixon style he went for the high-side and started his march to the front! Within just a few laps the battle for the lead was on between Billy James and Ed Dixon, as well as a battle for third between the #66 of Chris Hall and the #24 machine of Darin Walker. The battle up front saw the leaders swap positions nearly every lap, but in the end it was all Ed Dixon picking up a cool $1,200 for his Fastrak Midwest Feature win at Clay County Speedway!
In the UMP Modified division it was the #66 of Michael Fox picking up the feature win over Brent Mullins in the #41m, Michael Bolyard took the third position with Kelby Simmons and Jay Jones rounding out the top five.
Tim Rheinhart picked up the win in the UMP Street Stocks after a hard fought battle with early race leader J.R. Dunlap. With only a few laps remaining the leader Dunlap appeared to have blown an engine while exiting turn four resulting in a DNF for the #79 machine.
In the UMP Hornet division Bob Zbinden picked up $500 for the feature win at Clay County Speedway. David Reed and Zbinden battled door to door for laps on end but late in the race it appeared that Reed tried to throw a block on Zbinden that resulted in Reed taking a hard hit in to the wall while exiting turn four. Reed hit the wall so hard that the fans in the stands felt the ground shake, fortunately Reed was unharmed but the car appeared to be a little worse for wear. Bob Zbinden was followed across the line by the #141 of Greg Lybarger and the #BO of “Mad Dog” Mike Mandrell.
Be sure and come out to Clay County Speedway next Saturday night, July 12, as the Fastrak Midwest Crate Late Models return for another $1,200 to win $100 to start event. All regular classes will also be competing, including the UMP Modifieds, UMP Street Stocks and the Death Defying UMP Hornets!
